Tight races can turn into wrestling matches in their denouement, blocking paths and trading paint as the finish line swings into view.
Pack racing is a particular thrill, with the game practically demanding aggression. In the hands it is weighty and pliable, you feel the chunk of the heavier vehicles but are given enough confidence to throw them around a dusty corner and into a sweeping drift, mud kicking up under the tyres as you go. Each feels great to play around in, with Codemasters’ enviable skill with car handling giving each different vehicle a definable feel. That and the keenness for Codemasters to mix up its disciplines, swinging between tightly fought Rallycross, friction-averse sprints across frozen ponds, pathfinding time trials over rocky terrain and trick-heavy Gymkhana diversions. It is a simple thing in its structure, moving you from race to race and offering you credits to upgrade cars as you go, but it is exactly this straightforwardness that gives Dirt 5 a moreish one-more-race quality. The game’s career, lightly narrated by video game voice acting stalwarts Nolan North and Troy Baker as a podcast duo, throws up different events that spider out as you progress. Super light Ariel Nomads and nippy buggies, roaring rally cars from different eras be they 90s Scoobies or modern day Aston Martins, throaty trucks and misshapen Sprint cars. That comes with a keen eye on variety in vehicles and race type. It is, at heart, a rally game but one that wants to broaden that scope to make a snappy arcade racer with a lot of power under the hood.
Makes sense shiny hardware begets shiny hardware.Ĭodemasters' Dirt 5 is certainly filling that role for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, although it is more preoccupied with making those spiffy motors absolutely filthy as you wrestle them around weaving mud tracks amongst a febrile pack. One that shows off that visual prowess with fancy bonnets and shiny chrome, careening along at a fair lick to get the pulse racing. One of the most traditional events of a next-generation console launch is the release of a spectacular new racing game.
